Amalia Fuentes, Miss Number One

For five decades, she has mesmerized the moviegoers with her
beauty and allure. As filmdom’s Miss Number One, she notched the record as the
first actress to become an independent film producer. She was also the highest
paid movie star of her generation.

We’re talking of the great Amalia Fuentes, probably the most
beautiful actress to ever grace the silver screen.

For the longest time, she has ensconced herself in her
private havens—an opulent mansion in New Manila and a tranquil house in Tali
beach, Batangas.  In this two-part
article, she shares her thoughts on life, family and fame, and why she is
considered a true showbiz evergreen.

Amalia first appeared onscreen in the 1955 film, “Movie Fan”
at the tender age of 15. As early as then, her beauty was flawless. But
ironically, she doesn’t put much premium on the physical.

“Of course, I’m
grateful that I was born beautiful. But I can’t take credit for it.  Ayokong maging proud dahil lang doon.  I want to be recognized for my
achievements,  na may narating ako,
either for myself or for others. I love women, who in their lifetime, have done
something about their lives, other than just being beautiful,” says Amalia in
her usual candor—arched eyebrows, and all.

And indeed, through her glorious reign as movie queen,  she proved that she’s more than just a pretty
face.  She was a risk-taker, a
trailblazer — a woman ahead of her time.

After seven years as a contract star of Sampaguita Pictures,
she turned freelance, put up her own AM Productions, and in the process made
history as the first actress who stood against the powerful studio system.

“It was a big
gamble,” says Amalia. “I was only 21 but I have a very good family support
system. Of course, at the back of my mind, there was this fear of failure.
Like
every thing in life, nandyan lagi ang danger. But even dangers can be utilized
positively. Kasi, kapag alam mong, you can fall, you will be more careful.”

And Amalia was truly careful, her gambit paid off.  Her foray into film production suited her to
a T.  She says, “In a way, I am a control
freak. I wanted to make movies that would prolong my career.  Putting up my own film production was
inevitable.”

That bold move was complimented by another smart
decision—she raised her talent fee to the hilt. If her colleagues were
getting ten thousand or less, per film, she asked for fifty. And while the
country’s biggest male star, Fernando Poe Jr, was getting thirty, Amalia was being
paid a hefty sixty thousand pesos per movie.

“That time, ako lang ang female lead na freelancer,” relates
Amalia. “Walang mai-partner kina Bobby (Vasquez), Ronnie at Joseph (Estrada).
I was doing 16
movies a year.”

Esperidion Laxa of Tagalog Ilang-Ilang Productions, for the movie
“Iyong-Iyo”.  Ang katwiran ko,  I gave up
the security of a studio system, and I had to make sure that what I
would get was well worth it.  I was able
to buy a Mercedes Benz car because of that film.”

And that’s not all. A luxury soap that prided itself in
having glamorous Hollywood endorsers like Jane Fonda and Debbie Reynolds, got
Amalia as the first Lux model in the Philippines . The company paid her a cool
100 thousand pesos for the job.

The soap commercial did not only break record in the
country, it was also used in the United States .  In order to accommodate Amalia,  the company removed the word ‘Hollywood’ and
replaced it with ‘world’, in its teaser: “Nine out of ten most beautiful
actresses in the ‘world,’ use Lux.”

Amalia, the captivating star, had truly arrived.

As a film producer, Amalia was the mother
of reinvention—way before pop queen Madonna was even born.  “Ako ang unang lumabas na vampire doon sa
“Ibulong Mo sa  Hangin”, she says.

“Artists should always reinvent themselves. You cannot rely
on your past glories. Noon sa Sampaguita, puro pa-tweetums ako, but when I
started producing my own films,  I
chose  roles, na hindi ko nagawa
noon.  There were also roles, na kahit
ayaw ng mga fans, ginagawa ko.  Kasi, I
wanted them to see me on a different light.
I was willing to take a risk. With my own studio, naging madali yun. Ang
feeling ko, kahit hindi kumita ang pelikula, I was able to prove
something.  At  nagawa ko ang gusto ko.  Kung hindi ako nag-produce, hindi siguro ako
nanalo ng award.”

In the process, Amalia also realized that her
pretty face and immense popularity have hindered her from getting
character-driven roles.

She explains, ”In the awards department,  hindi ako masyado, kasi noong time ko,

People tend to believe what they see on screen. So, even
actresses before were afraid to tackle roles that were out of the ordinary”.

But why was she so driven?
What motivated Amalia?

“Darling, we were poor,” she says nonchalantly. “I lost my
father (Alvaro Muhlach Sr.) when I was five years old. What am I gonna do with
my life? When I was a child, we just have enough money
to buy gas for our lamp. Kasi  ang light
namin sa Mindanao , yung de- gaas lang. Yung kinki ba.”

And that explains her
strong money sense. Like the fictional
Scarlett O’Hara, she vowed never to go hungry again. “I lived through
poverty. Yung mga taong nag-aakala, that they will never be poor, akala lang
nila yun.

Today, Amalia remains as busy, doing housing projects here
and there and spending her precious time with husband Joey Stevens, and their
son Geric, who is  taking up Law  at the Ateneo de Manila University.

As a starry-eyed orphan who made millions out of hard work,
good sense and sheer determination, Amalia rightfully earned her place in the
hearts of every dreamer who tinkers on the art of the possible. For comments, send e-mail to

  1. Amalia is truly Ms. Number One of Philippine Movies. No actress comes close to her beauty and achievements in Philppine cinema. A true trailblazer, a woman ahead of her time.

    • She is the most popular film actress dubbed”Elizabeth Taylor of the Philippines” born in Manila in 1941 she is the multi-time award winning talent in films television and media and a popular icons from the Philippines in entertainment media history. Thanks for the information. From:Wayne

    • She is the original Queen of Philippine movies & mother of the late Anna Liza Sumilang/Liezl Fuentes star in several TV films music & media from the Philippines in entertainment history.

      • Yes, I agree. Amalia’s beauty is incomparable, a rare gem whose glitter can be noticed even from a distance.

  2. Amalia or Nena as I casually call her is truly Ms Number one in all aspects: Beauty, & brain, & most of all very witty in terms of handling finances. If you gaze at her classic face or beauty in general you will think that she is suplada but in reality, she is generous & down to earth woman, humble & takes care the welfare of her subordinates (employees & production staff) with unprecedented magnanimity. I know her because I worked with her for many years.

  3. I grew up adoring Ms. Fuentes when I was still living in Sta. Ana,
Manila. I’m a big fan, until now (I now reside in Los Angeles, CA). She is the most beautiful actress to grace the Philippine
Cinema, no one, until now, has equalled or even came close to
    her beauty and grace.

  4. Amalia just need to lose weight, it’s for health reasons, never
mind the physical, all people grow old, I’m 58 years old now
and recuperating from my gall bladder surgey, I have hyperten-
sion and diabetes because of weight gain. I want to see Amalia
for another twenty years, LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!!

  5. I admire Amalia Fuentes for her financial saviness, a self-made
woman who knows how to handle her wealth. I hope she’s
richer now and forever. Family members always are the ones
ungrateful of our help, it happens to a lot of people including
myself. I worked very hard to help my family but in the end
it’s not appreciated, very sad, but true.. But, we shall overcome.
    take care

  6. This article was written 2 years ago but it is still generating interest from fans who are obviously loyal to her despite sprouting beauties in the movie industry. Amalia’s feistiness is an asset while other stars who try hard to look feisty are being looked down and branded as WaK (Walang Karapatan).

  7. You’re absolutely right! No one can equal Ms. Amalia Fuentes,
until now, there’s thousands of new actresses in the Philippines but no one can compare to her beauty, grace,
brain and financial saviness. Yes, she’s Number One!
    but

We love you Amalia, take care!

    Fr.: D’Lifetime AMALIAN’s Loyalists!

    • I absolutely agree!!! I’m very, very picky when it comes to idolizing someone, Ms. Fuentes fits all my criterias. She’s exceptionally beautiful plus a business savvy actress. No one has matched her beauty and grace up to now…

  9. As you’ve said, pagsama-samahin pa lahat ng actresses ngayon diyan sa Pilipinas, they couldn’t hold a candle, no match silang lahat. During her prime, super ganda at super bongga talaga!
    There’s only one like her…

      • I was overjoyed when ABS-CBN announced that Ms. Fuentes will be a part of the teleserye “Muling Buksan Ang Puso”, a reunion with Ms. Susan Roces, but was very disappointed when Ms. Fuentes quit the show. However, she’s better off without it, due to the long hours of taping and what was mentioned as creative differences. Hello, you, guys, she’s not a spring chicken anymore, give her a break! What’s with this 24 hour taping? Good for Amalia, if she doesn’t need it, she can leave it!…

      • Maybe ABS-CBN thinks Amalia is so short in that she will accept an offer that will suit her financially or just plain stop-gap measure to satisfy her hunger for roles due to long absence from movies. It was a wise decision for Amalia to refuse it because making a so-so teleserye that she considers her swan song is not worth to remember her by.

      • So, how about the Elwood Perez comeback movie she’s suppose to star in? Are they pushing through with the project?I haven’t read or heard about it anymore. I just hope Ms. Fuentes can do a teleserye at the other network, maybe they’ll be more generous and accommodating, something to watch everyday via TFC…

      • That Elwood Perez’s project I think is still in the making or must have been shelved already as no more news about it is coming out lately. It was being trumped up almost at the same time when Amalia’s supposed teleserye made it to the headlines. The fans are restive and will not stop until they see Amalia finally does her swan song. And so the clamor goes on…and on…and on….

  10. Absolutely right! This is like doing something for nothing! Who are they fooling, who are they kidding? Amalia is very smart, she was right to complain about the character she was playing, a villain from start to finish? Come on, she’s a movie queen, a rich movie queen at that, not an old, poor, money starved has been

  11. I think AMALIA is not going to make her comeback movie “Proserpina De Manila” anymore…I’ve read one of the blogger here…Please check Elizabeth!

    • Another disappointment for me! I’m dying to see her again, either in the silver screen or those tele-novelas. I read she’ll be guesting on some ABS-CBN shows, oh, well, better for her, not much taping. I wish her well, hope she’s fine and healthy, MS. AMALIA, I LOVE YOU!!!!

      • GREAT!!! I have started to watch “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala”, good to know that Amalia will have a special participation as Judy Ann Santos’ ally, not a kontrabida. I hope Ms. Fuentes will enjoy doing teleseryes and be reinvigorated to do more. As we always say at work, “Make money and have fun”…

  12. Mr. Alfred the Great, I enjoyed reading your enumerated comments re: Ms. Amalia Fuentes, “Kakaaliw”, in fact, I read it everyday, very, very true. Ganda legs n’ya, no? By, the way, sino na ba ang movie queen sa Pilipinas ngayon?

    • Hi Elizabeth, thanks, you enjoyed reading my enumerated comments about Ms AMALIA FUENTES, The QUEEN of the UNIVERSE (Note: Not only in the Philippines, but, in the whole UNIVERSE)…Movie Queen today in the philippines? None! Hindi nila puwedeng tawagin na Movie Queen si ganito o ganoon…bago mabigyan ng titulo and isang actress ng ganitong title na movie queen kailangan meron siyang patunay or proof na deserving ang isang actress na bigyan ng title na: Queen Of Philippine Movies…BTW: For me, Still…Miss AMALIA FUENTES…The “Real and the Genuine” “MOVIE QUEEN OF PHILIPPINE CINEMA”, The “MOST GLAMOROUS ACTRESS OF PHILIPPINE MOVIES”, The “ASIA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS OF THEM ALL”, The Original, and the First Actress, given the title of the term “SUPERSTAR”…ETC, ETC, ETC…
      >MISS AMALIA FUENTES…The Ever BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS…From Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow!!!

      • Korek!

  13. Mga bagong artista ngayon sa pinas? ewan ko, di ko rin alam, wala ako sa pinas, andito ko sa US of A…wala akong nakita sa kanila na yong tinatawag na “Standard of Beauty”, lahat sila wala nito, mga beauty nila VERY ordinary lang…Hindi pa pinapanganak ang papalit sa Trono ni Ms. AMALIA FUENTES! and AMALIA is SECOND to NONE! Elizabeth visit my Blog…you just type AMALIA FUENTES (in lower case) at the search box of Google…you will read entitled: Miss AMALIA FUENTES: QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE; ASIA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS, The MOTHER, PRODUCER, BUSINESSWOMAN; MOST GLAMOROUS MOVIE QUEEN…Tama yung sabi ni ogloveco31, AMALIA will be active in “Huwag ka Lang Mawawala” ABS-CBN teleserye…

Monday to Friday at 10:50 p.m.

GRRR!!!!…

      • Even during their Sampaguita days, German Moreno had not been so keen on getting close to Amalia, as he was to both Gloria and Susan. But knowing Amalia’s temperament, it was not a big deal and she couldn’t care less.

      • Of course, just like everybody else, kampo-kampo talaga ang buhay. We experience that in every aspect of our lives, we have friends and enemies as well. Most of the time the “INGITERAS” and “INGETEROS” surrounds us, just like MS. AMALIA, because she’s a movie queen and so “SIKAT”, marami ring jealous sa kanya, mga detractors na walang magawa sa buhay. Mabuti na lang she knows how to handle the negatives, diyan ako bilib sa kanya, lumalaban talaga, pero, hindi Annabelle Rama type ha, inis ako diyan kay Annabelle and Ruffa, mag-inang aswang! inaway si Amalia, and Ruffa is so bastos with all her name calling against Amalia. Akala niya, maganda siya, ang pangit-pangit na nga niya ngayon, bata pa siya, mukhang laos na laos na siya, wait lang when she’s 70 yrs. old, baka mag-amoy bagoong na siya.

      • Ah those lowly mother and daughter team. I doubt if Ruffa would even reach 60. With all the “retokes” done on her face, she looks like a stinking bagoong. She has the habit of disclosing her frequent travels as if proclaiming she can jet-set to cities as famous and expensive as Singapore, Paris and London. Whether she spends her own money or somebody else’s is nobody’s business but, does she have to brag about it? For all Ruffa knows, Amalia had been to all these places more often than she had and I doubt if Ruffa can match Amalia’s frequent trips in her lifetime. Annabelle Rama, is a first class harbatera just like her minion and Ruffa;s co-accused in the MFF scam, Lolit Solis. Remember when these leeches had to be flown to Las Vegas free to watch Manny Pacquiao’s fight?

  15. Me, wala akong tiyaga sa german morenong ‘yan…He must be thankful to the extent that i wasn’t in showbiz or else i have to yell infront of him… “AMALIA FUENTES” until he’s eardrum damage and mabingi, hehehe…when i was still in pinas, and i saw german on tv, he usually mention susan roces and gloria romero’s name with a shout voice, WTF! sarap sampalin ng face left and right! Ano kasi itong si german makitid rin ang tak-u nito…it was Ike Lozada on AMALIA’s side, although, he’s not like german everytime to shout AMALIA’s name, and it’s not necessarily to shout the name of Miss AMALIA FUENTES…the Entire Philippines knows AMALIA…Mukhang professional itong si Ike than german…
…And speaking of AnnaEvil este Annabelle (magka rhyme kasi ang name) ang yung daughter nitong si “RuFuck” este rupa, mali nanaman ako, sorry…Eh, WALA NAMANG SINABI ang mag-inag ito…si annaEvil este annabelle pala, i remember, she entered the movies in early 70’s as “Bombera” (correct me if i’m wrong)…ito namang si RuFuck este rupa, third placer lang naman ito sa miss world, she’s not the title holder, kung baga, pasang awa lang ito, she’s the most beautiful among the ugly candidates of miss world 19..? and you rupa, you’re “Not Beautiful” to tell you FRANKLY! i have my Two Eyes, and i’m Very Sensitive when it comes to “Look” the “Looks” of a Woman’s Beauty of the Face!…kahit magsama pa kayo ng nanay mong si annaEvil gutierrez, wala kayo sa “KALINGKINGAN” kay Miss AMALIA FUENTES: QUEEN Of The UNIVERSE, and “ASIA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS”! and this is a FACT! Yeah, rufuck, i think, you want to be look alike of Angelina Jolies’ lips…lips of Angelina is natural, pouting lips, while youre’s (rupa) is not, WTF! @rolog143…rupa, she’s not only looks like a “stinking bagoong” but, i think Rupa looks like a “Pozo Negro” and a “toilet bowl”, kadiri!
    >And at least AMALIA reach the age of 70’s, Still BEAUTIFUL!…Eh si Rupa makarating kaya sa ganitong age? baka bukas hindi na siya magising! hi RuFuck, goodbye!

  16. Korekek! Bulls Eye!!! Feeling maganda and rich ‘yang mag-inang ‘yan.

  17. I am quite disappointed on Amalia’s very brief appearance sa Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala. Hindi ko na pinapanood ang succeeding episodes dahil nawalan na ako ng interest so I switched to GMA’s My Husband’s Lover.

  18. I actually enjoyed Ms. Amalia Fuentes brief appearance in Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala. Her acting was restrained and sincere. Although in some scenes she did not look good because of her weight and grooming, still at more than 70 years of age, she looks beautiful. She is a true Queen, and actually the only real Queen of Philippine cinema.

  19. Gloria Romero, daughter Maritess and apo were guests at Ryzza Mae Show last Friday, Feb. 2, 2014. Susan Roces was the guest in its pilot episode last year. Gina Pareño was one of the players in one of Let’s Ask Pilipinas episode, a show hosted by Aga Muhlach on TV5 and in one episode this year, Aga’s father Alvaro, Arlene, Almira and another one whose name escaped my mind while none from Amalia’s side, were guests. I am very sure Amalia does not need these kind of shows and based on articles written by reporters close to her, Amalia’s close relationship with her brothers was never the same again up to this date. Do these explain why its very difficult for us to see Amalia’s return to screen despite popular clamor from fans?

  20. No, according to Ms. Fuentes, nothing could break the bond between her and her brothers. Since they were children, they have been together through thick and thin. Remember, they only have each other and until now, I assure you that she is still the acknowledged matriarch of the Muhlachs. Contrary to her image as a little mataray, Ms. Fuentes is kind and thoughtful to her friends. She is also respectful and cautious not to hurt their feelings. In fact, she would rather not talk about touchy subjects if she knew it would cause discomfort to people she loves. On the subject of tv or film projects, Im convinced negotiations have not prospered because her terms are not met.

  21. We used to walk to Amalia’s house from Sta Mesa and we were so happy to see her and other fans were there too. From Amalia’s house we would walk to Sampaguita Pictures which was not too far to walk. Her opening movies at Life Theatre was also my biggest experience just to see her or the other stars. I was still in Manila when she made the movie 28 de Mayo, I wanted to see the movie but I was scared to see it because I had experience the 28 de Mayo Thypoon that year and I was in my teenager life. Now, the place I was born and raised they reconstructed the areas which is now the SM CenterPoint Mall. I got to see many stars at my early age and they were handsome and beautiful and they were tall. What happen to the stars now that they are short? Amalia still has her face even she is in her age now, you can still recognize her as Amalia. When I first saw her daughter I said, oh my God she is another Amalia. I left Manila on 24 Oct 1967 to California USA. I have been back many times as ‘Balikbayan’ hope to see Amalia? My families are/were from Batangas City. ‘You are so beautiful Amalia and take care!

    • Hi, Beverly, I’m an avid fan of Ms. Amalia Fuentes. I grew up adoring her and watched almost all of her movies. I migrated to the United States in 1984, I now live in Los Angeles, CA. I’m still a fan of Amalia, although she’s older now and so am I (I’m 59 yrs. old), she’s still beautiful! Who doesn’t get old anyway? At that time it was Susan Roces vs. Amalia Fuentes, the rivalry was so intense and tight, the admiring fans were killing each other! It’s just so funny to reminisce what went on, well, they were two beautiful queens of Philippine cinema, I like Ms. Susan too, but it was Amalia who captured my heart the most, I just love her to death, so, very, pretty, unmatched by anyone to these days…

      • Elizabeth, I am not that far from LA. Something happened to my email before this one, I lost it or got to send unexpected. I am 65yrs old. I am still working full time. Amalia is my favorite. I watched the teleserye with Judy, Sam and KC. She is still beautiful but I did not like her hair styles. I hope her daughter is doing good. Goodnite for now. Beverly

  22. To all the faithful & avid fans of Amalia Fuentes, pls visit also her face book page (Amalia Muhlach) for throwback or flashback photos reminiscing the yesteryears with her followers like me as well as updates on her most recent activities. Hope to hear from you all via FB…Joey Perlado

  23. The tread is already long and still counting. Proof that Amalia is still a very interesting topic. By the way, the much touted “It Takes Gutz To Be A Gutierrez” reality show had gone pffft, I hear nothing about the show anymore. Well it doesn’t take to be brainy to understand the behavior of this family. Their leech drum beaters even announced there will be a sequel but TV5, I guessed abandoned it long before the first series of six episodes were completed for lack of sponsors. Who would dare gamble for a show with a family who are known second rate trying hard copycats as stars.

  24. Ever since Amalia suffered a stroke two years ago, news about her became rare. The last one I read was about the improvement in her condition. Slight as it was, however, it raised hope for her to recover. She is always in my prayer. Please keep this article online. Di ako magsasawang basahin ang anumang balita tungkol sa kanya, whether past or present.

  25. When my daughter was born 25 years ago, I wanted a name that, when it’s said, or you hear it, you see something beautiful. “Amalia” was the name I chose for her, and she was baptized thus. And yes – may I humbly share – call it a father’s pride – my daughter – by God’s grace – grew up to be “beauty and brains.” That’s why I tell young parents whom I meet: choose your child’s name well.

    • Congratulations! If she were alive, Amalia would surely appreciate what you did naming your child after hers. At 25 now, if she possesses a similar business sense that Amalia had, your daughter must be successful in business and works hard trying to beat all odds
